What Is Veterans Overnight Care?
Veterans overnight care is a type of overnight home care that provides support during the night while you remain in your own home. It’s designed for veterans who may need assistance, supervision or reassurance overnight due to health conditions, mobility challenges or safety concerns.
This form of home care overnight ensures that help is available when it’s needed most, whether that means occasional assistance during the night or continuous monitoring for added safety. Depending on individual needs, care can be delivered as either active or inactive overnight support.
Care That Fits Your Needs
No two people are the same, and neither are their care needs. Before we begin, a Lumia Care Registered Nurse will visit your home to assess your care requirements. We’ll work closely with you (and your family or authorised representative) to create a care plan that’s tailored to you.
Two Types of Overnight Care
We offer two flexible options, so you get the right level of support:
Inactive Care
Your carer will be on hand when needed but will have the opportunity to sleep. If assistance is required during the night, they will wake to help. A spare room with a bed is required, and the service is available for up to 12 hours per night
Active Care
Your carer will stay awake throughout the night, providing continuous support and ensuring you feel safe and cared for. The service is available for up to 12 hours per night
What Type of Overnight Care Is Right for You?
The right type of overnight care depends on how much support is needed during the night. Inactive overnight care is typically suitable when assistance is only needed occasionally, such as help with toileting, repositioning or reassurance, while active overnight care is better suited for individuals who require continuous monitoring or frequent support due to more complex needs.
Our team will assess your situation and recommend the most appropriate option, ensuring your overnight home care is tailored to your routine.
When Is Overnight Care Needed?
Overnight care can be helpful in a range of situations where additional support is needed during the night. This type of care provides reassurance, safety and continuity of support for veterans without needing to move into residential care.
Having access to overnight home care allows individuals to remain in a familiar environment while receiving the right level of support.
Overnight support may be suitable if you or your loved one:
Requires assistance getting in and out of bed during the night.
Is at risk of falls or wandering.
Needs help with toileting or continence care.
Experiences disrupted sleep due to medical conditions or dementia.
Requires regular monitoring or medication overnight.
Feels anxious or unsafe being alone at night.
Is Veterans Overnight Care Covered by DVA?
In many cases, veterans overnight care may be available through the Department of Veterans’ Affairs for eligible individuals, including those who hold a Gold Repatriation Health Card. The level and type of overnight care provided will depend on your assessed needs and eligibility. This may include active overnight care for continuous support or inactive care where assistance is provided as needed throughout the night.
Overnight care can also form part of a broader aged care support plan, alongside services such as veterans’ community nursing or home care support through programs like Veterans’ Home Care (VHC).
Our team can help you understand what you may be entitled to and guide you through arranging the right level of support based on your individual circumstances.
