Negative Pressure Wound Therapy
Some wounds need extra support to heal. Negative Pressure Wound Therapy, also called NPWT, uses a small pump and a sealed dressing to gently remove fluid from a wound.
Lumia Care nurses can provide NPWT as part of wound care at home. We monitor your wound, support your comfort and work with your treating team to help your recovery.

What is Negative Pressure Wound Therapy?
Negative Pressure Wound Therapy is a treatment for some complex or slow-healing wounds.
It uses gentle suction to:
remove extra wound fluid
reduce swelling
support blood flow
help healthy tissue grow
protect the wound while it heals
Your doctor or treating team will decide if NPWT is suitable for you.

How Does Negative Pressure Wound Therapy Work?
The process typically involves:
Applying a specialised NPWT dressing that is carefully fitted over the wound and sealed with an adhesive film
Connecting the dressing to a portable pump using flexible tubing
Creating gentle negative pressure, which continuously draws excess fluid away from the wound
Collecting the fluid in a canister, helping keep the wound clean throughout treatment
Maintaining a stable healing environment between NPWT dressing changes while protecting the wound from external contaminants
NPWT may help by:
✔ supporting wound healing
✔ reducing extra fluid around the wound
✔ lowering the risk of infection
✔ reducing the number of dressing changes
✔ improving comfort during treatment

✔ is affecting daily life
NPWT is not right for every wound. Your doctor or treating team will confirm whether it is suitable for you.

How to Prepare for Negative Pressure Wound Therapy At Home
Before your nurse arrives, having a few things ready can help the appointment run more smoothly. You may be asked to prepare:
✔ Your referral, treatment plan or hospital discharge information
✔ A current list of medications, allergies and recent health changes
✔ Any NPWT supplies, canisters, dressings or equipment provided by your hospital or supplier
✔ A clean, well-lit space where the nurse can assess the wound and change the dressing
✔ Notes about any pain, bleeding, odour, drainage, skin changes or pump alarms since the previous visit
✔ Contact details for your treating doctor, wound specialist or hospital team
It can also help to make sure the pump is charged where required, keep pets away from the treatment area and wear clothing that allows easy access to the wound.
